Antony Michael Esprey

Early Life and Education Antony Michael Esprey was born in South Africa on August 28, 1950. He completed high school in 1967 where he excelled at swimming. He earned his Degree of Dental Surgery at The University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1973, the same year he got married, the two events that would shape the rest of his life. Marriage and Family He met Loredana in 1970 and she would become the love of his life. After they married in 1973 they went on to build a family of three children - Francesca, born in South Africa (1973) and twins Natasha and Carl (1979) who arrived in Amsterdam. The greatest joy in his life was his family and he always said how lucky he was to be blessed with many grandchildren. Family meant everything to him, especially his many grandchildren. From Francesca, he was given Liam (25) and Sienna (18). Natasha expanded the family with James (17) and Georgina (15), while Carl provided him with Joshua (14) and Arabella (10). He was equally grateful when he added step-grandchildren, Ricky (21) and Finlay (20) to the family. His quick wit and dry sense of humour was legendary amongst his friends and family. He often spent many hours typing out a story or message deliberately selecting every word he used to ensure they were descriptive and impactful. Career and Travels After the birth of Francesca, the family set off on a series of adventures around the world. Starting in London for 2 years and then Amsterdam for 4 years where he practiced as a dentist. They returned to South Africa in 1980 and for the next 2 decades he ran his own successful dental practice in Edenvale, building a reputation as a caring professional with a warm chairside manner. After they had successfully brought up their children they undertook another adventure in the United Kingdom. They moved to Weybridge, Surrey where they built a successful practice and many wonderful friendships. Retirement and Later Years He retired in 2018 and they immigrated to the USA in 2021 to be closer to Francesca in Virginia and Natasha in Chicago. Carl’s family remained in the UK before subsequently moving to Portugal in 2026. Retirement for him was never about slowing down. He filled his time either surrounded by family or planning their next adventure. He was a tireless traveller although Italy always had a special place in his heart - the architecture, the art, the language and the food. He would continually marvel at Loredana’s encyclopedic knowledge of history and her wonderful itineraries. One of the proudest moments was the day he got his Italian passport. Antony was overwhelmed with the beauty and size of America. He would wake up and express his awe every morning when he opened the blinds and looked outside or when he was driving to the various events or friends they were visiting. He could not believe how beautiful the sun rises and sunsets were and would share how incredible it was to see the sky in Virginia. When he first arrived, he would take pictures every night to show the magnificence of it. But above all else Lore was the center of his world. Every night before he went to bed he would take her face gently into his hands and tell her “I really love you, I really love you. You gave me wonderful children and I had a very good life”. Antony was survived by Loredana, Francesca and Antony, Natasha and John, Carl and Sasha, his grandchildren, Liam, Sienna, James, Georgina, Joshua and Arabella and his step grandkids Ricky and Finlay.
